Survey Results – Are You a Typical Hurtwood (Surrey Hills) Mountain Biker?

While I’m working on a fancy “info graphic” to present the survey results, I thought I’d post a profile of a typical Hurtwood mountain biker (those who filled in the survey anyway). Perhaps we should have asked what car people drove & what bike they rode to either confirm or debunk the Audi/Orange 5 stereotype 😉

  • General

    • Male (94%)
    • Aged 35-44 (45%)
    • Travels, on average, 27 km (17 miles) to ride the Hurtwood
    • Rides the Hurtwood once every two weeks or more (59%)
  • Does approximately double the recommended amount of physical activity each week:

    • 3-4 hours per week mountain biking
    • No time road biking(!)
    • 1-2 hours per week doing other physical exercise
  • Skilled riders who are adventurous/outdoor savvy:

    • Rate their riding skills as “good” or “advanced” (61%)
    • Spend the majority of their time doing “trail/all mountain” type riding (64%)
    • Not bothered about riding well signed trails/routes (only 33% preferred to ride well signed trails/routes)
    • Don’t just stick to trails & routes they know (only 29% preferred to stick trails they knew)
    • Happy to use a GPS or map to follow a route (58%)
    • Enjoy just going out and discovering new trails (83%)
  • Views of trails:

    • Thinks Barry Knows Best is “good” or “brilliant” (87%)
    • Thinks Yoghurt Pots is “good” or “brilliant” (67%)
    • Thinks Telegraph Row is “good” or “brilliant” (50%)
    • Don’t really know the trails on Pitch Hill by name!
    • Think it’s “important” or “very important” that trails are ridable all year round (79%)
    • Trails which have an undisturbed, natural feel are “important” or “very important” (59%)
  • Sociable:

    • Riding with a group of friends is “important” or “very important” (70%)
    • Feeling like part of the mountain biking community is “important” or “very important” (49%)
  • An adrenaline junkie who likes to ride hard but also relax:

    • Pushing your limits is “important” or “very important” (73%)
    • Thrill seeking is “important” or “very important” (71%)
    • Riding in a relaxed manner for your own pleasure is “important” or very “important” (60%)
  • A major environmental & social conscience:

    • Enjoying the surroundings & natural environment whilst you ride is “important” or “very important” (96%)
    • You overwhelmingly think that good relations with the local community where you ride are “important” or “very important” (98%)
    • You don’t think it’s OK to build trails on private land without permission (76%)
    • You 100% agree that mutual respect between users (bikers, walkers, horse riders etc) is “important” or “very important” (100%)
